Every AC has a finite cooling capacity. When outdoor heat, direct sun, indoor cooking, guests, laundry, or frequent door opening add heat faster than the system can remove it, run time increases. Is there water near the air handler? Write down the thermostat reading, approximate outdoor conditions, and what you notice. That information is more useful to a technician than a general report that the system “runs a lot.”

Schedule service if the system runs continuously and indoor temperature keeps climbing, if airflow from vents has dropped noticeably, or if it shuts off and restarts frequently. New noises, musty odors, a breaker trip, water around the indoor equipment, ice on a refrigerant line, or unusual humidity are also reasons to call.

An AC can run all day because of dirty coils, restricted airflow, a blower issue, a drain safety switch, duct problems, electrical faults, thermostat concerns, a refrigerant leak, or another mechanical issue. Adding refrigerant without finding the reason it is low, for example, is not a dependable fix and should only be handled by a properly qualified professional.

If the system is making an alarming sound, smells like something is burning, trips a breaker, or has visible ice, turn it off at the thermostat and arrange professional help; do not keep resetting it to force cooling.

Regular maintenance gives a technician an opportunity to check airflow, drains, electrical components, coils, temperature performance, and the condition of accessible equipment. It is not a promise against every breakdown, especially in peak summer weather, but it can reveal developing issues before the house is under maximum demand.
